The Franklin Institute - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Built in 1934 by Architect Mr. John Woodruff, the Franklin Institute is a monumental building located on Logan Circle and the Parkway. ARMM was engaged by Mr. George Anderson, of the Franklin Institute, to reroof this prestigious Philadelphia landmark.

The Franklin Institute is a world-famous learning center and science museum. It was named to commemorate Benjamin Franklin, scientist, inventor, printer, humanist and statesman.

The basic construction of the existing roof on the Franklin Institute was a lightweight concrete deck system over a four-ply coal-tar pitch membrane on a concrete deck.

A paver quarry tile system that was used for promenade and deck was installed over the lightweight ash concrete.

ARMM's focus was to remove the promenade and deck areas and to install a membrane system that would support and receive pavers to allow continuing walkway traffic over the roof areas.

Reroofing the Franklin Institute was a major challenge involving complex construction, coordination of all construction parties and the quality of the roofing contractor.
